SCOPE

This is the fifth in a series of workshops aimed at providing an international forum for the exchange of information on quality of service (QoS) research in distributed systems. The objective of the Fifth International Workshop on Quality of Service is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners working in all facets of QoS research addressing multimedia applications and services, programmability, operating systems, communications, multimedia devices and middleware.

Contributions are solicited in all areas of QoS research in distributed systems, including, but not limited to:
  • Human Perception and Dynamic QoS
  • QoS Programmability, Languages and Formal Method Techniques
  • Multimedia Tools, Protocols and Networking
  • QoS Guarantees in an Integrated Services Internet
  • QoS-based APIs for Applications, Transport and Management
  • Audio and Video Coding/Compression Techniques and QoS
  • QoS Modeling, Analysis and Evaluation
  • Adaptive Applications and Services
  • QoS and the WWW, MBone and Internet
  • QoS Issues in Storage Systems/Databases
  • QoS and Operating System/Micro-kernels
  • QoS Architectures
  • Media Scaling and QoS Filtering Techniques
  • QoS and Mobility in Wireless Networks
  • QoS Translation, Negotiation, Monitoring and Maintenance
  • QoS in Standards
  • QoS in MIBs for Network Management
  • Experimental Studies on QoS
  • Middleware Solutions for End-to-End QoS
In the past the workshop has been cross-disciplinary, small and well focused, consisting of keynote speakers, invited papers and solicited contributions. As a result, a considerable amount of time is devoted to informal discussion. The Fifth International Workshop on Quality of Service will be limited to 80 participants.

SUBMISSIONS

Authors are invited to submit full papers and position statements for review. Full papers should not exceed 12 single-spaced pages including figures, tables, and references, using a typeface no smaller than 12 points. Position statements should not exceed 3 single-spaced pages. To expedite the reviewing process, please submit the paper electronically (in postscript format, through e-mail) to workshop@ctr.columbia.edu. All submissions must include name and affiliation of the authors, a contact address of the main author, an abstract, and keywords. In the case where electronic submission is impossible please send 4 copies to the correspondence address below.

    HISTORY

The Fifth International Workshop on Quality of Service is part of a continuing series: The first workshop, held in May 1993 in Montreal, Canada, was supported by the European RACE project `QoS TOPIC' and the Canadian CITR project `Broadband Services'. The second workshop was organized within the European RACE Conference on Integrated Services and Networks (IS&N) and took place in September 1994 in Aachen, Germany. The third workshop was held in February 1995 in Brisbane, Australia, in conjunction with the International IFIP Conference on Open Distributed Processing. The last workshop was held in March 1996 in Paris, France, in conjunction with the IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Platforms and IFIP International Workshop on Formal Methods for Open Object-based Distributed Systems.

    LOCATION

The workshop will be held at the Schapiro Research Building, Columbia University, Manhattan in the City of New York. A variety of hotels options will be available to the participants. Internet access will be provided.
